A basic problem in modern indoor automation needs to be addressed. People aren’t constantly on the move; instead, they sit down, read, type, meet and work in silence. A conventional movement-based system has difficulty in rooms where people remain still for long periods. Sensinova has designed NOIR DUO, a new 2-channel presence sensor based on PIR first detection and 24 GHz true-presence sensing, to meet this need. The sensor combines movement detection, accurate presence detection, and independent control of two connected channels in a single ceiling-mounted device.
A room can be occupied even if there is no visible activity; for example, consider someone reading in a library or sitting through a long meeting. The person is there, even if their body doesn’t move much.
NOIR DUO uses two sensing stages to manage this situation.
The PIR sensor detects initial entry. After PIR first detects entry, the 24 GHz true-presence sensing layer maintains occupancy detection by detecting very small movements within the inner zone. The inner detection area can pick up slight seated movements, such as those associated with breathing. This establishes a practical difference between detecting entry and recognising that occupancy has continued.
The NOIR DUO is designed for recessed ceiling installation with a 67–69 mm ceiling cutout. Its installation height ranges from 2.2 to 4 metres, with 3 metres recommended for balanced coverage. It provides 360° detection, and the coverage diameter can be adjusted from 2 to 8 metres using the on-board SENS control.
In the inner area, extending to about 3 metres, the 24 GHz true-presence sensing layer detects very small movements made by a person who is seated or reading and helps maintain the occupied status. In the outer area, between 3 and 8 metres, standard motion detection detects walking activity over a broader room or corridor.
The control panel has additional adjustment controls. The LUX control determines the ambient light threshold, ranging from 3 to 2000 lux, and includes a SUN mode for operation regardless of daylight conditions. TIME1 and TIME2 establish separate switch-off delays for each channel, with settings from 10 seconds to 60 minutes. Channel 2 also provides an impulse mode for pulsed control signals.
The NOIR DUO doesn’t replace established PIR technology; instead, it combines PIR motion detection with 24 GHz true-presence sensing for areas that require more precise occupancy control. The equipment operates simply.
A person enters the room. When PIR motion detection picks up their entry, both channels are activated. After this initial PIR activation, the 24 GHz sensing layer helps maintain occupied status when it detects fine movement within the inner zone. TIME1 and TIME2 then control the two channels independently, based on their configured delay settings.
This two-stage sensing approach makes the sensor suitable for rooms where people often remain seated for extended periods.
Most PIR sensor products have a single output, but the NOIR DUO has two, and each has its own timer. Channel 1 has a dry contact rated at 7 A and suitable for a 300 W LED load, while Channel 2 has a dry contact rated at 10 A, also suitable for a 300 W LED load, and supports both normally open and normally closed wiring.
When the PIR detects presence, both channels switch on. Afterwards, TIME1 and TIME2 continue according to their own settings. For example, the light in a meeting room could switch off after 15 minutes, while a connected AC unit or a BMS input remains active for up to an hour. The two channels therefore allow different connected functions to remain active for different periods based on their individual timer settings.
The unit operates on 220 to 240 volts AC at 50 Hz, has an IP20 rating suitable for indoor use, and functions within a temperature range of -20°C to +40°C. Sensinova also provides a three-year warranty for the NOIR DUO against manufacturing defects.
NOIR DUO works on an AC voltage of 220 to 240 V and has a frequency of 50 Hz. Channel 1 has a 7 A normally open dry contact and supports a 300 W LED load. Channel 2 has a 10 A changeover dry contact that can be either normally open or normally closed, together with a 300 W LED load.
The sensor has an IP20 rating and is intended for indoor use; its operating temperature range is from -20°C to +40°C. Sensinova states that a qualified electrician should perform the installation and suggests using an external relay or contactor for heavy AC, fan, or high-inrush loads. For architects, electrical consultants, system integrators, and facility teams planning installations, these details matter.
Sensinova’s sensor range is expanded by NOIR DUO to include applications that require more precise occupancy detection and two separately timed control outputs.
The product combines established PIR motion detection with 24 GHz true-presence sensing, enabling it to detect entry, help maintain occupancy status during slight seated movements, and provide individual timing control for two connected functions.
For offices, meeting rooms, libraries, hotels, and other indoor installations, this combination delivers more responsive room automation.

A regular PIR motion sensor relies on movement-related changes and may stop detecting a person when they remain still for an extended period. NOIR DUO combines PIR first detection with 24 GHz true-presence sensing, helping maintain occupancy detection when slight seated movement is present.
NOIR DUO provides 360° detection with an adjustable diameter from 2 to 8 metres. The inner true-presence zone extends to roughly 3 metres and is designed to detect fine movement, while the outer zone is used for standard motion detection.
Yes. NOIR DUO provides two independent channels. Channel 1 has a 7 A dry contact and Channel 2 has a 10 A dry contact, with each channel having its own timer setting from 10 seconds up to 60 minutes. Channel 2 also supports impulse mode.
Mount it centrally on the ceiling at a height between 2.2 and 4 metres, with 3 metres recommended for optimal coverage. Keep the detection area clear of mirrors, glass, moving curtains, fans, plants, heaters, lamps, and strong airflow sources for more reliable detection.
Sensinova backs NOIR DUO with a 3-year warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty excludes damage caused by improper installation, modification, or use outside the rated specifications.
